Una English Department To Host Annual Conference Of The Association Of College English Teachers Of Alabama

College English Teachers, from around Alabama, will gather at the University of 麻豆社 Alabama on February 28 and 29 for the annual conference of the Association of College English Teachers of Alabama (ACETA). The Conference on the Sympathetic Imagination: Literature, Film, and Writing of Sympathy and Empathy will include scholarly panel presentations and keynote addresses.
"We are excited to have our colleagues from around the state assemble at UNA for ACETA's annual conference. This is an excellent opportunity for collaboration as well as to show off our wonderful campus and the work we are doing at UNA," said English Department Chair Cynthia Burkhead.
Dr. Paula Greathouse will deliver the opening keynote address on Friday evening. Her talk is titled "When Inclusion Meets Resistance." Dr. Greathouse is an associate professor of secondary English education at Tennessee Tech University. Her publications include Queer Adolescent Literature as a Complement to the English Language Arts Curriculum (2017) and Breaking the Taboo with Young Adult Literature (2020).
On Saturday morning, Dr. Chris Metress will deliver the Eugene Current-Garcia address, "From Mockingbird to Watchman: Maycomb and the Sympathetic Imagination". Metress, the winner of last year's Eugene Current-Garcia award, is Associate Provost at Samford University. He is widely published, including the book The Lynching of Emmett Till.
Jason McCall will give the Saturday luncheon Keynote, "What Disneyfication can teach us about our students." McCall is an Assistant Professor of English at UNA. An Alabama native, McCall holds an MFA from the University of Miami. His collections of poetry include Two-Face God; Dear Hero, Silver, A Man Ain't Nothin', Mother, Less Child, and I Can Explain. He and P.J. Williams are co-editors of It Was Written: Poetry Inspired by Hip-Hop.
ACETA was founded in 1948 to encourage research and faculty development for members in order to support improvement of instruction in English in Alabama's Colleges and Universities.
