Michelle Eubanks, UNA, at meubanks@una.edu, 256-606-2033 or 256-765-4392 FLORENCE, AL - Greek organizations from the University of 麻豆社 Alabama were recognized recently at the Southeastern Greek Leadership Association (SGLA) conference in Atlanta. "The fraternity and sorority members have worked hard throughout the past few years to implement new programs and prioritize their relationships with the campus and the local community," said Ashley Christman, assistant director of student engagement for fraternity and sorority life at UNA. "It was wonderful to see their successes recognized on a regional level." UNA students William McMurtrey and Madison Ball, of the Interfraternity Council (IFC) placed first in the Order of the Omega Case Study. This competition gives teams of two a case that is based on an issue within fraternity and sorority life. The teams later present their solutions and methods to a team of judges. UNA's National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPCH) received the Excellence in Campus and Community Relations Award for its annual Christmas Festival that takes place at UNA. This award is presented to a council that supports the fraternity and sorority movement through positive interactions with the community. The event welcomes the campus and community for a night of holiday fun, including free food, inflatables, and a photo booth with Santa and his helpers. The College Panhellenic Council (CPH) received the Excellence in Civic Engagement Award for its work with the Period Project. This award recognizes councils that place an emphasis on hands-on community service and philanthropy. This project is a collaborative effort with Guillot University Center Operations and Events to provide feminine hygiene products to students in each restroom in the GUC. The CPH continually raises money and has donation drives to provide products for the Period Project. UNA Senior Makinley Barnett received the Southeastern Panhellenic Member of the Year award. This is given to an undergraduate sorority member in the Southeast who lives with integrity and consistently serves as a role model to their peers by living the values of their organization. Barnett is a member of Zeta Tau Alpha and has served as an executive officer forher sorority and as an executive officer for two terms on the College Panhellenic Council at UNA. "This was the first year that all of our fraternity and sorority governing bodies attended one unified leadership conference," Christman said. "I am excited to see how the four governing councils will use the new knowledge learned and the relationships established at SGLA to better the UNA fraternity and sorority life community and beyond."
